WITH the Olympic torch heading to our shores this week, pupils in West Craven will have their own taste of the celebrations.
Thanks to the generosity of bosses at Pendle Engineering in Nelson, a special torch has been created for youngsters from all the schools to take part in their own relay.
Head of PE at West Craven High Technology College, Dean Wilson, will lead the relay, which starts at Earby Springfield on May 22nd at 10 a.m. Pupils will carry the torch on a route through Earby to Kelbrook, Salterforth, and then to Barnoldswick, taking in Coates Lane, St Joseph’s, Gisburn Road, Church School, and finally to the high school.
Those not involved in running the relay will be waiting at the schools to wave flags, and Gisburn Road pupils will lead a lap of honour around Barnoldswick Town Square around noon.
Parents will be invited to the respective schools, but organisers are hoping residents, traders and visitors will line the route to cheer on the pupils.
After the event, each school will display the torch in turn before it finally takes pride of place in the high school library on a specially-made stand.
