TOP British writer Alan Bennett has backed plans to reopen the rail link between Colne and Skipton - but there could be royal support, too.
The Leeds-born author and playwright has backed Selrap - the Skipton and East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership. But the campaigners are also hoping to get support from somebody even more famous - Prince Charles!
The partnership’s media officer, Jane Wood, said: “Our support continues to grow and Selrap is delighted to have award-winning playwright and author Alan Bennett on board with what we are trying to achieve.
“In my role as media officer, I recently contacted the Prince of Wales as he has shown a great interest and practical support through his charities for regenerating areas of deprivation in East Lancashire and also his concern for the economy in North Yorkshire after the foot and mouth epidemic.
“The re-opening of this line would bring great economic and social benefits, particularly for young, unemployed people, so Prince Charles was very interested in hearing about our campaign.”
Selrap’s next open members’ meeting takes place on Monday evening. It is taking place at 7 p.m. in Herriots Hotel, Broughton Road, Skipton.
Jane said: “This meeting provides an opportunity for Selrap members and prospective members to hear about the ‘way forward’ for this group campaigning to re-instate the missing rail link between Skipton and Colne.
“The venue is very convenient as Skipton Railway Station is just across the road from the hotel.”
The Selrap AGM will be on March 12th at Providence Independent Methodist Church in Albert Road, Colne.
