A TOUCHING letter written from the heart about how wonderful their school in Nelson is and what it means to them has won two classmates a very special prize.

For thanks to the words of Roisin Tongue and Kalan Middleton, St John Southworth Primary School has won a special Diamond Jubilee party pack to help them celebrate the historic occasion in style.

Branded clothing specialists Recognition Express ran the competition for local schools and invited them to write to the Queen to tell her why their school was special.

In their joint letter Roisin and Kalan, who are both 10, wrote: “Our school is the best because we are never mean and selfish. We care for one another and we are the best academicn school ever.We are united whether we are catholic, muslim, protestant, chinese, Japanese or different….’

Howard Ashworth who runs Recognition Express Lancashire, a leding supplier of promotional and business products, with his son Paul said: “The children’s letter to the Queen was very heartfelt and moving. It is clearly a very special school and a very deserving winner.”

The school has been presented with the party pack that includes 300 official Jubilee flags, Union Jack and Jubilee bunting, balloons and ribbons so the children can celebrate in style with a Buckingham Palace garden party on Friday June 1st.

Mr Chris Higgins, deputy headteacher: “Our school is very diverse and has a rich multicultural background. As a family we celebrate both our differences and the things we share in common. It is fantastic that our children have been recognised for how well they work together and the fact that they are proud to be British. We look forward to celebrating Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee together and the extra resources will make our celebratory events even more special.” Al the letters written by the children who entered the competition will be sent to Buckingham Palace.

And here is the award winning letter in full from Roisin and Kalan:

Dear Her Majesty the Queen.

Our school is the best because we are never mean and selfish. We care for one another and we are the best academic school ever.We are united whether we are Catholic, Muslim, Protestant, Chinese, Japanese or different. Our school dinners are rated 4 and they are scrumdiddliumptious!

We may not be the best at sport but we definitely the best at being kind and helpful. We have a brilliant natural field and a forest in which we do forest schools. We are proud to go to our school.
