COLNE-born cyclist Steven Burke has been selected for the Great Britain track team for next month’s Olympic Games.

The former Park High School and Nelson and Colne Colllege student, who won a surprising bronze medal in the individual pursuit at the Beijing Olympics four years ago, was named in the five-man team pursuit squad on Wednesday.

Steven and fellow squad members Ed Clancy, Pete Kennaugh and Geraint Thomas won the world championship in Australia in April. The fifth squad member is Andy Tennant.

Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, who was part of the Colne civic homecoming party for Steven four years ago, said: “I am delighted that Steven has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Games in London. There are lots of enthusiastic cyclists in Pendle and Steven made us all proud when he won a bronze medal in Beijing four years ago. I’m sure the whole borough will get behind him again this year as he goes for gold.”
