Thirty pupils from West Craven Technology High School are heading to the London 2012 Olympics in August for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

The group will travel to the capital on Thursday, August 9th, to live the dream, taking in the women’s football final at Wembley Stadium before spending the night at Eton College.

On the Friday, the group will have a chance to explore the Olympic Park before watching women’s hockey.

Danielle Mullen, of the PE department at West Craven High, said: “The option to go to London was open to everybody from year eight to 10.

“We’ll see the women’s football final and a hockey match and the children will have a chance to have a look around the Olympic Park, which looks fantastic. We are all really excited and I think it will be a great experience.”

With the opening ceremony to the London games now just a fortnight away, the children’s excitement has been growing this week during five days of “Olympic events” at the school.

Pupils have been taking part in the school’s Olympic Week, which kicked off on Monday with a five-a-side football tournament.

Other events held at the school included seven-a-side cricket, netball, athletics, horse riding, a triathlon and volleyball.

These have been complemented in a comprehensive list of sports with off-site activities, including an aquathon at West Craven Sports Centre, ice skating at Blackburn Ice Rink and BMX cycling at Manchester Velodrome.

What’s more, as well as pupils competing against themselves, staff were encouraged to get involved in a number of sports which saw them face off against pupils in badminton, table tennis and rounders.

Dean Wilson, also from the PE department, said: “It has been amazing to see so many pupils experiencing activities they don’t get to try usually, such as BMX biking and horse riding.

“The week has gone really well and the children have enjoyed it and been motivated. We’ve been really lucky with the weather for outdoor events. The sun came out for the athletics on Wednesday and there was a group playing golf on Thursday.”

The school’s commitment to Olympic activities has also seen West Craven High acknowledged as part of the Olympic Get Set network of schools and colleges across the UK.

This accolade is awarded for demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic values of inspiration, determination, courage and equality.
