Police appeal after street assault

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a 55-year-old man was subjected to an assault in Nelson.

The incident happened as the victim was walking home along Sagar Street, Nelson, at about 3-30 pm on Tuesday, July 17th. He was approached by a group of men, one of whom pushed him in the chest causing him to fall into a stationary van which had pulled up at the traffic lights. The victim suffered injuries to his eye during the incident.

Police are specifically appealing for the driver of a small white van which had pulled up at the traffic lights at the time of the incident to come forward.

PC Martin Vernon, from Nelson Police, said: “Sagar Street is a busy road at that time of the day and is used by commuters from all corners of the county to access businesses and training centres. I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident to contact police as soon as possible.”

No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.

l Liam Vyse (19), of Banksfield Avenue, Hebden Bridge, has been charged with assault and has been released on police bail to attend Pennine Magistrates’ Court on Friday, August 3rd at 9-30 a.m.
