COLNE and Nelson Rugby Club have secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.

The club will receive £49,440 to refurbish and rejuvenate the changing room block at Holt House.

The changing rooms are being transferred to the club from Pendle Borough Council, under lease, and they will provide a modern, safe and functional changing space for a variety of sports as well as a new fitness facility.

Club chairman, Chris Buck said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our premises.

“It is the cornerstone of our strategy to have an outstanding club for the 2012 Olympics’ legacy.”

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the the Olympic and Paralympic Games to local communities. Every sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark - celebrating the link to the Games.

With local help and support, the club received the funding, which will have a huge effect on sports men and women in the region.

Andrew Stephenson, MP for Pendle said “This is brilliant news for Colne and Nelson Rugby Club.

“I supported their bid to Sport England and was delighted for Chris and all the team at Holt House when I heard the news.

“This will provide a real lasting legacy of the Olympics for Colne and the surrounding area.”

Colne and Nelson RUFC is one of hundreds of projects across England benefitting from lottery investment through the second round of the Inspired Facilities fund. Sport England have recently launched a further £10 million funding round to help local community sports groups to upgrade their facilities.

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the North West Region.

It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community.

For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”

Bids for Sport England funding will be accepted from 23 July 2012.

Places People Play is being delivered by Sport England, working partnership with the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) with the backing of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the London 2012 Inspire mark.
