YOUNG sailors from Burwain Sailing Club were once again in the prizes at Southport Sailing Club’s 12-hour race.
This was the 25th year this unique event had been held and brought together youth sailors from all around the country.
Held on the safe waters of the Marine Lake, this year’s event was well attended with 27 boats taking part.
Burwain SC entered two boats this year, each boat sailed in relay by teams of two sailors, one to helm the boat and one to crew.
Each pair of sailors competed for 90 minutes before coming back to the shore to change for a new team, this carrying on throughout the 12 hours of sailing.
As with many other of the sailing events held this season, strong winds predominated and made simply finishing the race an achievement.
The less experienced B team finished in 24th place.
The A team boat with the more experienced sailors, many of whom had competed in the event in previous years, recorded Burwain’s best result to date with ninth place, and second place in the Under 18s competition.
The A team also won a trophy for one of the fastest laps of the course.

Burwain Sailing Club will be entering two boats in the even more grueling 24-hour race also held on Southport Marine Lake in September, and after the success in the 12-hour race, the younger sailors are keen to take on this event as well.
This involves the added challenges of sailing in darkness and avoiding around 70 other boats on the course.
