Spiders and snakes at Nerlson Manor

THERE will be spiders, snakes, bunnies and all sorts of beasties roaming the grounds of a Nelson care home on Saturday from 11am to 3pm when the residents and local folk enjoy a Zoo Day Anniversary Party.

The 70-bed Nelson Manor Care Home on Barkerhouse Road - which has separate facilities for residential, dementia and nursing residents - is throwing open its grounds and lounges for a fun day to celebrate its second anniversary.

There is no charge for entry to the event, which features Ranger Rob and his animal experience, and visitors will enjoy hands-on fun with reptiles, snakes, spiders and a host of furry creatures.

Games, face painting and Do-It-Yourself ice cream sundaes will also be available, plus delicious food served up by the care home’s chef.

The over-60s can also enjoy a free show and refreshments from 6pm on the day, when popular North-West vocalist and keyboard player Kate Conway will perform hits from the 60s and 70s.

Nelson Manor manager Joanne Shapcott explained: “We like to make our events as lively and stimulating as possible, and we thought a Zoo Day would bring back a lot of happy childhood memories for residents.

“Handling animals can also be very therapeutic and it will be interesting to see how many residents and staff feel brave enough to handle snakes and creepy crawlies! We hope lots of local folk pop in, because there will be fun games and activities going on for young and old.

“Then we have a first-rate show by Kate Conway in the evening, which should have everyone tapping their feet and singing along.”

Joanne concluded: “We are gaining a strong reputation for not just providing very high standards of care, but also busy and fulfilling lifestyle for residents of all abilities and health issues. Our second anniversary Zoo Day will give us activities and projects to do with residents in the weeks before and after, such talking about much loved pets and other animals, and designing animal masks in the dementia unit.”
