With Jay Rodriguez and Chris McCann both having just over a year on their existing contracts, Burnley boss Howe explained he will turn his hand to other deals once the transfer window has closed.
He said: “We’re not currently in discussions with anyone else, but it is something that we’re looking at.
“I think once the window’s closed, we will probably sit down and go through other players as well.
“This is going to be a busy time, so we’ll probably leave that until February.”
Ben Mee is close to sealing a permanent move from Manchester City, with just personal terms left to agree.
Howe said: “I think he falls into the same category as David – a composed, good footballer, brave, a great attitude, a winner.
“I think they are pretty similar in terms of attributes, and they are the type of centre halves we want to try to bring in.
“The Manchester City side is done, it’s just trying to sort things out with Ben.”
Meanwhile, Sam Vokes is available for the last time at The Riverside before his loan from Wolves expires, and Howe is keen to look to extend that deal.
He said: “We’ll have to sit down after the Middlesbrough game and go through it.
“The difficulty with Sam is whenever he’s played I think he’s done really well.
“He’s just been really unfortunate that he’s had to battle for a place.
“What I wouldn’t want to do is keep a loan player and not give him the minutes, because he’s here to play games and try to progress his career.
“That’s the difficulty, trying to keep everyone happy is difficult enough with the ones that we’ve got, so with Sam I’ll only want to keep him if we can give him the football that he wants.
“I’ve admired Sam for a long, long time and I still do.
“Nothing’s changed, in fact he’s enhanced his reputation with me. That’s the frustrating thing.
“I wish I could play five strikers at the minute, but depending on our system, I can only play one, two or three.
