ANGRY politicians have slammed vandals who recently wreaked havoc at Colne Railway Station.

Leader of Pendle Council, Coun. Joe Cooney and Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson have been left disgusted, after the station, in Primet Hill, was left badly damaged overnight between Saturday October 5th and Sunday October 6th.

Offenders used concrete blocks and bricks to smash three panels from a waiting shelter, and damage the ticket machine.

They also caused £350 worth of damage to a Ford Mondeo that was parked at the station, smashing the windscreen, as well as scratching and denting the bonnet.

Coun. Joe Cooney said: “It’s a disgrace that people see the need to cause mindless vandalism.

“Colne Railway station is a vital transport connection for the area and we need to encourage more people to use it. Events like this won’t help.

“Selrap are doing great work to make the case for the Colne to Skipton line to be re-opened and the action of these vandals could affect that aim if people are too scared to use the station.”

Mr Stephenson, who lives close to the railway station, said: “I was disgusted to hear about the mindless criminal damage at Colne Railway station.

“I hope those responsible are caught and the full force of the law is used against them.

“I would urge anyone with information about those responsible to contact the British Transport Police.”

And adding his concern Alan Benson, secretary of Support the East Lancashire Line Association, said: “It is a bit ridiculous.

“They set their minds on these things, and it is probably because they have nothing else to do.”

British Transport Police are now urging members of the public to come forward with any information about the incident.

PC Tony Greenwood said: “This is nothing other than wanton destruction carried out by people who clearly have little or no respect for their surroundings or the property of others.

“It is imperative that we trace those responsible before they damage any further property.”

Any information should be reported to the British Transport Police on 0800 405040, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111. In all calls quote background log B5/NWA of October 16th 2012.
