PAUL Fildes hit a hat-trick as Barnoldswick Town crushed Stone Dominoes 9-0 on Saturday.

And Town enjoyed another away win on Tuesday night, as two goals in the last half-hour were enough to beat Squires Gate 2-0.

On Saturday, it didn’t take Town long to take the lead, as a corner from Liam Blades saw Mark Threlfall make a brilliant dummy, and Neil Chapman thundered a tremendous shot past keeper Ashley Woodhouse.

Town increased their lead four minutes later when again Threlfall was the provider, as he released Danny Boyle with a well-timed pass 10 yards into the Stone half, and he easily outpaced the defence and slipped it past Woodhouse.

Barnoldswick made it three on 24 minutes, as Blades sent over a pinpoint free kick, and the unmarked Threlfall headed firmly back across goal into the far corner.

Town were looking dangerous from every attack, and with four minutes of the first half left, Billy Priestley headed a Blades corner home from six yards out.

The goals continued to flow in the second half as, on 51 minutes, Fildes curling a brilliant shot from the corner of the area over Woodhouse and into the top corner.

Four minutes later he got his second, Boyle running into the penalty area and squaring the ball across the face of the goal to see him calmly side foot past the hapless keeper from eight yards.

Woodhouse, on loan from Stalybridge, must have been having nightmares having conceded five goals the previous week in his first loan match.

Threlfall scored his second on the hour with a well-placed header, before Fildes netted his hat-trick goal with 18 minutes remaining, making no mistake after being sent clear.

If Stone thought the scoring blitz was over, Blades had other ideas, as he picked the ball up at the side of the dugouts on the halfway line and set off down the wing, before cutting into the area, rounding a defender and crashed a tremendous shot past Woodhouse.

To be fair the scoreline could easily have been well into double figures but for the form of Woodhouse in the Stone goal.

Town had to be more patient on Tuesday night at Squires Gate, however.

They set off well and caused the first threat when Threlfall fed Boyle on the corner of the area, and his curling shot was inches wide of the far post.

Town had all the play, with Fildes controlling well on the penalty spot, turning and shooting in one movement, with his effort inches past Neil Beesley’s right hand post.

Fildes again on 25 minutes had the ball at his feet 30 yards out, but his shot was just too high.

All the attacking play came from Town in an impressive display, but half-time came with the match still goal-less, Marko Marosi in the Town goal having nothing of note to do.

Six minutes into the second half, Harry Thompson fed Threlfall just outside the corner of the area, and he opened up his body and curled a great shot round the diving Beesley, but once again inches past the far post.

Squires Gate, in their first threatening attack on 56 minutes, should have scored, as they broke from a Town corner and substitute Joshua Miller seemed to get the ball stuck under his feet, allowing the defence to clear.

On the hour Town took the lead, as Blades was played in out wide, and he took the ball on and crossed along the six-yard box where a defender half cleared to the edge of the area, and Chapman came onto the ball, shooting past three defenders into the net.

Town increased their lead on 75 minutes as Thompson crossed to the far post, Threlfall dummied, and substitute Stewart Airdrie scored from eight yards out, a brilliantly-worked goal.

The Town defence then had to earn their corn as the home team pressed forward, and Marosi saved at point black range from Daniel Cooper to keep the two-goal advantage intact.

Tomorrow Town turn their attentions to their second round FA Vase match at home to Armthorpe Welfare, kick-off 3 p.m.
