IN their centenary year, Colne ASC clinched promotion to the First Division of the North East Lancashire Friendly League after a tense swim-off gala at Pendle Leisure Centre on Friday.
The bottom two teams from the First Division - Ramsbottom and Haslingden - and top two teams from the Second Division - Colne, who won the division, and Pioneer 79 did battle.
There was a steady start to the gala as each of the teams seemed to take turns at winning races.
After 20 races - the half-way stage in the gala - Haslingden were in fourth on 42 points, Colne third on 51 points and Ramsbottom and Pioneer tied for the lead on 53 points.
After 30 races Colne were neck and neck with Ramsbottom, with Pioneer trailing by a few points.
Haslingden had dropped off the pace by then, but were still managing to win the occasional race.
The final 10 races were tense as Colne, Ramsbottom and Pioneer won a race, only to then finish last in the next.
With the last race swum, the noise levels dropped as everyone held their breath waiting for the final results.
Haslingden had finished fourth with 82 points, with Pioneer 79 third on 98 points, Ramsbottom second on 107 points and by three points Colne had won with 110 points.
At that point some of the Colne swimmers jumped into the pool in celebration!
This means that Colne and Ramsbottom will be competing next year in the First Division, with Pioneer and Haslingden in the Second Division.
The previous Monday and Thursday, the club held their Annual Club Championship Galas.
Over the course of the two nights there were two new records set, in the new Open 200 metres Individual Medley events by Morgan Hartley and Nicole Baxter, and an existing record broken in the 10 and under 25 metres Butterfly by Jasmin Lahey.
The most successful swimmer was Alex Berry, who won five of his events.
Ashleigh Dibb, Jasmin Lahey and Nicole Baxter each won four events, with Jacob Talyforth and Stephanie Brooks winning three events.
Winning two events were Ben Wilson and Jonah Thomas-Kelly.
The remaining 18 events were won by Abigail Harrison, Daniel Grant, Danielle Baxter, Emma Wilkinson, George Connolly, Georgia Taylforth, Gregan Baker, Isaac Rowan, Jack Nevison, James Barker, Lewis Eley, Lewis McKenna, Mia Dodman, Miranda Bower, Morgan Hartley, Olivia Taylor, Philip Croxall and William Havers-Strong.
