AN “outgoing” little boy who fought off meningitis earlier in the year visited a Colne building society with his mum to help raise awareness of the disease.

Little Louie Jenkins, who was described by staff at Skipton Building Society’s Colne branch as a “cheeky little monkey”, and his mum Julie, talked to customers about their story, as well as how to recognise the signs and what to do if you think your child has been affected.

Louie contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia in January 2012 at the age of seven months, and as a result had to have both legs amputated below the knee, lost the fingers on his left hand, and the finger tips on his right hand.

He now wears prosthetic legs, and as a result of his illness The Little LAMB Appeal (Louie’s Amazing Meningitis Battle) was set up in the hope of saving other lives and raising funds for specialist equipment the youngster may need.

The building society have shown their support for the appeal, and are currently raising money for it by selling handmade baby booties between now and Christmas. Around £30 has been collected so far.

Donations can also be given to staff members at the Colne branch.

Branch manager Deborah Kirby said: “Louie is an amazing little boy. He and his family have been through so much and yet have come out fighting.

“Louie and his mum Julie are now doing all they can to raise awareness of this awful condition in the hopes that other families will not have to go through a similar situation.”

• An open day is being held at Skipton Building Society, in Albert Road, Colne, on December 12th, between 10am and 4pm.

Sherry, tea or coffee, and mince pies will be served throughout the day, and branch manager Deborah Kirby, financial planning manager Nick Barker and review adviser Emma Gray will be available to talk to.

The event is perfect for anybody wanting to get information or advice about all areas of the financial services industry.
