FORMER Claret Andy Payton has claimed he parted company with NWC Premier Division outfit Colne to find a new challenge.

The prolific former Turf Moor striker joined the Reds as Nigel Coates’s assistant in the summer and helped guide the club to fifth in the league.

However, prior to Colne’s 3-1 victory over St Helen’s Town on Saturday, Payton announced his departure.

“It just felt like the right time to move on and find a new challenge,” he said.

“Nigel Coates has been there for a decade, he’s Mr Colne, and things are done his way at the club.

“I have no problem with that whatsoever but as his assistant I didn’t feel I was having enough input.

“At training he’d take a back seat and let me get on with it but on match days I wasn’t involved with the team selection or team talk.

“I just felt as though I wasn’t having my say.

“There’s been no fall out at all and I’ve left on amicable terms.”

Payton added: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club, I’ve learnt a lot, and I’ve loved working with the lads.

“I’ve had six months there so it’s been good for me.

“I feel I’ve got plenty to offer because I’ve worked under some great managers and things rub off.

“I’m glad Nigel offered me the role there but I just want a bigger part to play.

“I’m sure other avenues will open up for me.”
