HUNDREDS of people attended the funeral of Pendle building business success Mr Andrew “Spike” Pickering – and as he loved horses his coffin was carried by a horse-drawn carriage.

His wife Wendy arranged to have a coffin featuring Las Vegas, where they held their wedding and honeymoon.

Spike (46), from Higham, died peacefully after being ill for several years, suffering from testicular cancer and having a fatal response to chemotherapy treatment.

He went to school in Brierfield and then trained as joiner with his uncle before setting up his own highly-successful business, Pickering Developments, which created four magnificent detached properties in Brierfield’s Massey Lane.

On Thursday last week, his funeral was held at Burnley Crematorium and it was packed inside and many people had to stand outside because it was so full. But fortunately it was a pleasant day weatherwise.

Wife Wendy, who was of course greatly devastated by the loss of Spike, said: “I was over the moon that so many people attended. It was a really nice, sweet service - everything was fabulous.”
