The end of the season is near and Colne and Nelson’s first XV are having their most successful campaign for a few years.

The commitment and outstanding coaching supplied by Ian Cockcroft and John Hargreaves has lead the All Blacks to a solid fifth place in the North Lancashire 2 League and has motivated the team to prosper next season.

The team has come a long way from a few years back, with barely enough people to field a side, to having three regular senior sides, and all this is a sign of a bright future up at Holt House, thanks to the committed coaches and volunteer staff.

Colne and Nelson are growing thick and fast and will be continuing their Colts side (pictured) for the second season, which is growing stronger every week.

The Colts have made it through to the semi-final of the Lancashire Plate and are hoping to progress onto the final.

This new youthful side have come on leaps and bounds and Colne are hoping to carry these players into their senior section.

The captain Kyle Hargreaves said: “Its been an honour to captain a team which has come from only a handful of players to a turnout of over 20 players every week.

“I’m sure we can maintain this next year and that I get the pleasure of being captain again.”

Given the success of community coach Callum Kinnane and his recruitment efforts, the junior section is thriving with young inspirational talent and the club hope to have a team for every age group ready for pre-season training and are looking into fielding a full girls’ side.

Colne have many recruitment events being planned, which will involve the club and the public coming together to raise the awareness of rugby union in the area.

The next event will be the touch league being run throughout May and June, and with no rugby experience required, it’s the perfect opportunity to try something new.
