AT the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year Awards, one of the groups honoured was from Pendle’s Marsden Heights Community College.

The event, sponsored by BAE Systems, takes place every year and involves the High Sheriff Jeremy Gorick inviting applications to find young people who have helped either their local neighbourhood, an individual, family member or local organisation.

Marsden Heights’s Positive Voices were given a commended award. They were aged 14 and 15 from Pendle, nominated by Stuart Wroe.

This group of young people are all third generation from Pakistan background. The Positive Voices project aims to raise public awareness within locally-based communities of the structural causes of poverty and conflict in Pakistan, building public support for peacebuilding and development processes within the region.

In the space of 12 months the young people have progressed from being interested yet uninformed participants, to local and global activist.

The young people have been planning their further actions for the coming year and they have expressed an interest to go to Pakistan to engage with young people and policy makers there.

They want to work closely with a group of young people in Pakistan to plan joint actions with the aim of mobilising public support for conflict prevention, peacebuilding and development processes.

They are young people who have changed within themselves, but have also brought about change locally and globally.

And they were given the High Sheriff’s Young Citizen of the Year honour.
