A new lottery fund launched on Monday has been described as “potentially great news” for a derelict Pendle mill by the area’s MP, Andrew Stephenson.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has launched its new £125 million grant programme, Heritage Enterprise.

It is designed to stimulate local economic growth, generate new commercial income along with new jobs and skills by unlocking the commercial potential of unused historic buildings and sites.

And Mr Stephenson said: “The announcement is potentially great news for Brierfield Mills. This funding programme means Pendle Council can bid for money not just to protect the mill, but to help transform it once again into a jobs and business hub for the local area.”

Brierfield Mills is the Grade II listed former Smith and Nephew building, which the Coalition Government gave Pendle Council £1.5 million to buy in March, 2012, but has been vacant since medical supplies firm BSN closed down its remaining operations at the site.
