A charity football match is set to kick into action on Sunday in memory of a “true gent” and Colne FC legend, who died earlier this month.

Organised by family and friends, the game will take place at Colne FC’s XLCR Stadium to celebrate the life of Kelvin Metcalfe (66) — a former Colne FC and Foulridge Minors coach.

The event, which will include a raffle, refreshments and music, will see both of Kelvin’s teams go head-to-head at 2-30pm.

Players, who are each making a £5 donation, will meet at 1-45pm.

Colne FC’s team is being coached by Kelvin’s eldest son Stuart, while the Foulridge Minors team is being coached by his youngest son Ben.

The match is also fittingly taking place on the birthday of Kelvin’s wife, Yvonne, and is being refereed by his friend, Coun. Joe Cooney.

All money raised will be given to Donna’s Dream House, and entrance is by donation only.

Danny Craig (27), a former youth team coach for Colne FC, who is helping to organise the event, said: “The driving force behind the match has been Liam Blades.

“Everybody that knew Kelvin has spent the last couple of weeks being upset.

“It is a case of we have got to start celebrating him now.

“The hardest thing is Kelvin never upset anyone, so being upset doesn’t feel right. He only made people laugh.”

And Coun. Cooney added: “It will be fitting tribute to Kelvin who was involved with amateur football for many years.

“I’m delighted to be asked to referee the match which undoubtedly will be a great afternoon.”

Throughout the match, Kelvin’s supporters will have the opportunity to take part in a silent auction.

Prizes include items such as a signed Steven Burke MBE shirt and signed Shayne Singleton boxing gloves.

Donations have also been made by the Alma Inn, Accrington Stanley and Barrowford Pet Stores.

Following the match, Kelvin’s favourite comedian and friend Mr Fizz-Eek will also be performing. As his favourite charity is also Donna’s Dream House, he has agreed that all of his fee will be donated to the charity.

Since Kelvin’s funeral last Tuesday, many people have taken to social networking sites to pay their respects to the popular Colne FC committee member, who last year retired from his job at Peter Scott Printers — where he had worked for 12 years.

Writing on the “Kelvin Metcalfe memorial match” Facebook page Chris Bell said: “It’s amazing how many people are wanting to play in this match. Shows just what a legend Kelvin was.

“Will be massively proud to be a part of this fantastic gesture even if I only get a few minutes on the pitch. Massive thanks must go to the people who have made this happen and the whole day will be a celebration of Kelvins life.”
