News that Pendle Council are working to take action on a derelict street in the Waterside ward has been welcomed by local councillors.
It is understood that at least seven companies or housing associations have put in serious bids to take over the two boarded up terraces in the bottom half of Walton Street.
The majority of the houses are owned by the council, who originally intended to demolish and redevelop the site. But this became unviable with the current state of the housing market.
Coun. Tony Greaves said: “The council has had to change tack, and is now looking at disposing of the houses to a third party for refurbishment and letting at reasonable rents.
“We hope that whoever takes them over will also take over responsibility for improving the street and back streets, looking after the area, and managing the properties and keeping them in good condition for many years.”
And Coun. Dorothy Lord added: “This street is a real blight on the Waterside area and we want to see action sooner not later.
“ I really hope it will result in a solution to the problem in Walton Street.”
