New Colne venue set for showstoppin’ soul

A popular Manchester act is encouraging music lovers to get their feet to the beat in June when a DJ duo bring their Chorlton sound to a newly-opened Colne venue.

Family Affair are a Manchester-based club night that specialize in big-hitting rare soul and funk vinyl delights.

Based at Dulcimer in Chorlton, South Manchester, the Family Affair duo of Paul Barker and Adam Maxwell can be found on the fourth Saturday of every month playing the best in soul, funk, rhythm and blues, disco and much more from strictly original 7in. vinyl.

Paul and Adam are now bringing the brand to the Green Chimney on Albert Road, Colne, for a special homecoming event on Saturday, June 8th in the cafe and bar’s basement music venue.

Various guest DJs grace the decks every month from all over the UK and turn Dulcimer into a little private dance haven and several specially invited DJs will be at the Colne event too.

Paul Barker moved from Burnley to Manchester 10 years ago and later started the club night Beat Boutique with a couple of friends.

Paul ran the night for four years and it went from a small night in the Manchester Metropolitan Students Union to a massive two floor event at the ultra-trendy Deaf Institute.

Special guest DJs (and soul enthusiasts) Tim Burgess from the Charlatans and Chris Geddes from Belle and Sebastian played at Beat Boutique and the night also had slots at the festivals - Bestival and a headline slot at Kendal Calling.

Beat Boutique was the big club night, but Family Affair was the little side project where the proper music is played.

Kathryn Kubiszewski, from the Green Chimney, said: “We are just really pumped up and excited and hoping to do it every month.

We’ve heard good things about them and they are well-established on the Manchester Northern Soul scene so it’s quite a big thing to get them here.”

Admission is free, music starting at 8pm and finishing at midnight. This promises to be a night to remember.
