Second crossing for new Barnoldswick school ‘welcome’

Pendle Council’s West Craven Committee has expressed its relief at Lancashire County Council’s decision to build two traffic light crossings on a busy Barnoldswick road.

Councillors from both political parties on the committee had pleaded with the county council to construct two puffin crossings on Kelbrook Road to provide safety for additional pedestrian activity.

The county council had originally planned for one crossing by upgrading the pedestrian refuge outside the Kelbrook Road garage.

This was part of the plans for the relocated Barnoldswick CE Primary School currently being built behind West Craven Sports Centre.

But councillors felt one was not enough and that it was in the wrong place with the primary school’s maximum capacity of 420 pupils adding to the secondary school traffic and leisure centre users.

One of the proposed crossings will be between the sports centre and secondary school entrances with the other, yet to be finalised, closer to the point where Essex Street becomes Kelbrook Road.

Chairman of the West Craven Committee, Coun. David Whipp, said at June’s meeting the solution was “extremely welcome”.

Richard Townson, Pendle Council’s Democratic and Legal Services Manager, also reported to councillors the plan of securing the existing church school site on York Street as an area of open space after the school is demolished.

Meanwhile, work on the new primary school building has started with staff and children equally excited to move into the new location, which is estimated to be finished and ready for use by Easter 2014.
