Do you miss Nelson Interchange electronic signs? Opinion poll

Bus and rail users are being asked whether they miss the electronic information boards at Nelson Interchange through a Pendle Council opinion poll.

Users of the interchange may have noticed that since the end of November, the electronic display boards have not been working.

This is because, as part of its budget savings, Lancashire County Council decided not to renew the contract to maintain the system.

This hasn’t just affected travel information boards in Pendle, but also those in Burnley, Chorley, Lancaster and Skelmersdale.

The boards gave up to the minute information about bus and train times, and the decision to turn them off has met with some public objection.

Now scrutiny councillors from Pendle, Burnley and Lancaster are exploring the possibility of maintaining the systems with the co-operation of Lancashire County Council and possibly other interested parties.

If successful, this would see them turned back on again.

The cost per year for maintenance of the Nelson boards is around £4,000. Another £4,000 would be needed initially to buy new IT equipment.

If these costs were to be met by Oendle Council’s Nelson Committee, the annual maintenance cost of £4,000 would represent about 3.5% of its annual budget.

However, if other partners agree to contribute, the cost can be spread across all those organisations.

Kath Haydock, Pendle Council’s Scrutiny Manager, said: “The first thing the council needs to know is whether the information boards are valued by people who use the interchange and whether they believe that maintaining them would be a good use of council tax payers’ money.

“Whether you feel that these electronic display boards are an asset that we should keep or a luxury we can do without, please let us know.”
