North West water firm United Utilities has announced that it is ready to start work on a collapsed sewer in Market Street, Colne next week.

Now that long-awaited demolition works have been carried out on an adjacent building, United Utilities’ engineers can start repairing the sewer, which is expected to take approximately nine weeks to complete.

Noel James, Project Manager for United Utilities, said: “We had to carry out extensive ground investigations and hydraulics analyses in order to work out the best method of repair.

“We also had to take into account how close the sewer was to other buildings and we’re very grateful for people’s patience whilst these investigations have taken place.”

During the works, one bus stand will be moved to the west end of the bus station and the sewer will still remain operational during the works to minimise disruption.

Peter Atkinson, Engineering and Special Projects Manager at Pendle Council, said: “Just like many local residents, we’ve been keen for work to start on the sewers and we’re very pleased that a date has now been set for the work to begin.

“We will continue to work with United Utilities to see the project completed as swiftly as possible and with minimum disruption to visitors to Colne town centre.”

The site was handed over to United Utilities this week, with the construction work itself expected to commence on Wednesday and finish in the early part of September.
