Sun shines for Captains’ Day at Marsden Park as Carol wins

Members of Marsden Park Golf Club celebrated captains Lindon Shaw, Wendy Brearley and Tyler Baxter’s day in excellent weather and course conditions.

Carol Robinson, who earlier in the season won the President’s Prize, continued her good form, winning the ladies’ prize with a score of 39 points, three points ahead of Sue Ellison, who beat Eva Pinder (who also won nearest the pin in two on the 9th) into third place on a card play-off.

Carol also picked up the prize for nearest the pin on the 2nd.

In the Junior competition, with an excellent score of 43 points, Thomas Nicholson was six points ahead of second place Oliver Scott.

Winner of the men’s trophy was Andrew Tootle with a score of 83-16-67, which beat vice captain David Perks’ 70-9-67 on a card play-off.

John Wrigley (82-14-68) was third on the card.

Men’s nearest the pin prizes went to Paul Timberlake on the 7th and Andrew Tootle on the 14th.

At Colne, the Stewart Marsden trophy was keenly contested, with a host of players all breaking par and the top three places decided on countback, all with a score of 65.

Winner was John Collantine (72-7-65) from Stuart Pratt (83-18-65), with Harry Bolton (70-5-65) third.

The gross prize went to Andrew Pinder.

The Tom Fryer Trophy event for seniors - 55 years and over was held in the format of a singles stableford competition, won by Phil Vernon with 33 points. ahead of Alan Binns with 30 points and John Collantine with 29 points.

In the ladies’ section, last week saw the PING qualifier - a four-ball better ball stableford, which saw 12 couples compete.

The eventual winners were Ingrid Massie and Eileen Foulds with 46 points, who should hopefully play at Gainsborough in September.

Second place with 40 points went to Cheryl Barnes and Debra Wood.
