Concerns have been raised after local Lib-Dems lost their fight to stop a funfair from being housed in Colne’s town centre during the upcoming Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival.
At the latest Colne and District Committee meeting it was agreed that the attraction, which is usually located near to Pendle Leisure Centre, will be placed in the Red Lion car park, behind Market Street, between noon and 6pm.
The decision was made despite fears of vandalism, noise and anti-social behaviour from some local residents and councillors.
Coun. Ann Kerrigan said: “Coun. Dorothy Lord and I both promised local residents that we would fight any future fairground on that location. We have lost that fight, despite ensuring that the committee was aware of all the past problems that local residents have had to suffer.
“What I request of residents is that should any incidents arise, they log them so that we can take issues forward.”
But according to Coun. Joe Cooney, moving the funfair will be of benefit to many local businesses over the August bank holiday weekend.
He said: “Over the last few years the Blues Festival has become focussed on the bottom end of Colne with many of the town centre businesses not getting full benefit of the festival.
“We thought it should try and include all the town in the festival. To do this, we wanted to provide something that would attract families and those who aren’t harden blues fans.”
Coun. Joe Cooney added that extra security will be provided while the fair is operating.
