A warning has been issued over the possible dangers of starting grass fires close to railway lines and on the embankments.

This follows an incident on Sunday afternoon when firefighters were called to an incident off Manchester Road, Nelson, close to the Hard Platts crossing.

Blue Watch manager at Nelson Fire Station Neil Hardiman said firefighters had to use beaters to contain the rapidly developing fire.

Mr Hardiman said: “Starting fires on the railway embankment can be very dangerous for the person lighting the fire and the firefighters called to extinguish the fire.

“Train drivers will experience reduced visibility, which in turn will further endanger the public using the crossing.”
