An independent children’s home, which has been “plagued with problems”, will shut down at the end of the month.
The decision has been taken to close Colne’s Applegate, which provides education to 11 to 17-year-old boys with behavioural difficulties, by operators Northern Care.
Residents and councillors have been raising concerns about the amount of anti-social behaviour coming from the Albert Road home, which opened back in 2005, for the past two years.
At the latest meeting of Pendle Council’s Colne and District Committee, it was reported the site had been being monitored daily by police.
Coun. Tony Greaves said: “Nobody objected to having the home there, and there were no objections to what went on inside. But it proved impossible to stop nuisance in the surrounding area.
“It was low-level nuisance, but when it goes on day after day it is unacceptable .
“The operators have taken the right decision. It was taking up a lot of police time.”
It is expected that Applegate’s six current pupils will be relocated upon its closure.
Billy Grace, operations director at Northern Care, which is also responsible for The Nook, in Knotts Lane, Colne, said: “The decision has been made to close Applegate, while we review our property portfolio.
“Following this comprehensive process, a decision will be made as to the future of the building.”
