Nelson start the new North West Counties First Division campaign with lofty ambitions.

The club have made a series of high-profile signings as they look to not only win promotion to the Premier Division - joining Colne and Barnoldswick Town - but recapture former glories, with one eye on climbing the six steps back to the Football League, where Nelson last played in 1931.

To that end, Mark Fell has brought in former Liverpool midfielder Adam Dawson, released by Wigan in the summer, as well as Liam Boswell, who joins from Bury, and Jonny Hession from Darwen.

Chief Executive Dave Edler said: “It’s time that this sleeping giant, asleep for most of the last 50 years, finally woke up and smelt the coffee.”

The Blues open the season at Leek CSOB tomorrow (kick-off 3 p.m.), before hosting Holker Old Boys on Wednesday (kick-off 7-45 p.m.).

They rounded off their preparations with a 3-2 win at Ryton and Crawcrook Albion on Saturday, before a 6-3 defeat at home to Silsden on Tuesday, with the visitors scoring three late goals to win.

Mick Berry, Adam Dawson and Danny Finch were on target for the Admirals.
