After a reasonable performance but a disappointing result on Saturday at Bootle, Colne earned their first points of the season with a 2-0 win at home to AFC Blackpool on Wednesday night.
The Reds went close early on through Jason Hart and Mickey Saunders, but at the other end Colne had Chris Thompson to thank for a brave save at the feet of Grant Dell.
Minutes later Hart came close again when his shot flew narrowly wide.
But on 15 minutes, Hart and Saunders combined to set up a chance for Nathan Taylor who gratefully blasted into the bottom corner.
Ten minutes later Colne’s lead was increased when Robert Grimes showed good feet as he skipped past four defenders before bending the ball into the corner.
In the second half, Blackpool’s response was limited to a few breakaway attacks which were easily dealt with by Richard Johnson and Tom Fowler, while Kristian Evans almost added a late third.
On Saturday, Colne went down 4-0 at Bootle, without a number of players who had picked up injuries.
Colne’s rhythm was disrupted on 15 minutes when Bootle were awarded a dubious penalty and Carl Ellerton was shown a red card after the ball appeared hit him on the top of his shoulder as he defended a corner kick.
The penalty was confidently converted by Tom Peterson and 10 minutes later Sam Corlett increased Bootle’s lead when he headed a free kick into the far corner.
Worse was to come for Colne when James Olsen’s wind-assisted cross drifted straight into the top corner.
Then on the stroke of half-time James Riley blasted home to make it 4-0.
Colne’s second half performance was encouraging, but the damage had been done in the first period.
Tomorrow Colne host AFC Liverpool at the XLCR Stadium before their away trip to Silsden on Wednesday.
