A Barnoldswick beauty spot attracted plenty of people to a heritage day which was being hosted on the Kennet working boat.

Greenberfield Locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was the venue last Sunday which was the latest step in an attempt to create a Friends Group.

Between 50 and 60 people stepped on board the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Society’s heritage working boat which was taking up its usual winter mooring position in Barlick.

The mobile exhibition gave visitors the opportunity to understand the work the group does and in the afternoon there was the chance to enjoy a guided walk along the canal with historian Mike Clarke.

Coun. David Whipp raised concerns at a Pendle Council meeting late last year that Greenberfield Locks had fallen into disrepair and expressed hope that area could be brought back to its best.

Mike Clarke, from the Kennet Friends Group, said: “We had a good day. I’d say there was a reasonable number of people who came on the boat. There was a steady flow considering we were just stopped at the side of the canal.

“From that I think there are about half a dozen people who said they were interested in helping and I know there are a few more who could not make it on Saturday.

“I think it’s more the vegetation control and natural environment which needs keeping in check. We’re looking at more planting and flowers along the locks.

“At the bottom of the locks, there is a stretch of old disused canal which could be made into a nature reserve. That’s a longer term project and one we could seek financial support for.”
