Nelson seconds won the Junior Cup for the fourth time on Saturday as they beat Burnley’s second string by five wickets at Seedhill.

Burnley posted a tally of 167 on a slow, low wicket, which proved insufficient as the hosts won with four overs to spare.

The visitors started slowly and were 43-3 - with Steve Eardley taking 2-7 in his 10 overs - until Josh Whitehead (74) and Andy Ellis put on the highest partnership of the innings with 58.

Ellis scored a quickfire 24, but when the pair departed - both out to Saj Asghar (4-31) - with just over 100 runs on the board, instead of pushing on to a score around 200, Nelson took control as wickets fell regularly, including a couple of run outs.

In reply, Nelson denied Burnley the quick wickets they desired, as the openers Chris Heap (14) and Toqir Hussain steered the hosts to 45 before the first wicket fell, and they also benefited from a number of extras.

Jonny O’Brien was first to strike with his offspin (1-31 off 10), removing Heap, but Tom Bradshaw helped add another 38.

Bradshaw (17) was run out, and Hussain fell to Paul Mortimer, caught behind.

Syed Shah and Shah and his captain Christian Foster (25) took Nelson to the brink of victory with a stand worth 62,

Foster was run out, and Colin Pemberton trapped in front by Nas Iqbal, but Nelson cruised home with 23 balls to spare as Shah hit an unbeaten 52.
