Fire-fighters were called in to help rescue a man who had fallen from the bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Scotland Road, Nelson, yesterday evening.
The man had broken his ankle falling from the bridge onto the side of the canal at 6-30pm with ambulance staff and fire-fighters having to use a ladder to climb down to the scene and treat the victim, who could not be moved.
Swift Water Rescue firefighters from Nelson used a specialist rescue sled to carry the casualty on a longboard across the canal where firefghters and NWAS personnel lifted him on to a stretcher and he was taken to hospital.
