NELSON Wheelers Cycling Club were in action at the initial time trial of the local season on the Bolton by Bowland course.

This race was of 11 miles and included a four-mile climb.

This event was won by professional rider Richard Handley from the Rapha Condor Sharp team with an impressive 23:55.

There were three Wheelers in the race with Chris Smedley bringing the team home with a 30:16 followed by Steve Moorhouse 31:15 and Craig Wilson, doing his first time trial, with a 33:46.

Last Sunday morning was the Circuit of Pendle time trial, organised by the North Lancs Road Club.

The 27-mile event started from Whalley over Blacko via Clitheroe, and was run in horrendous weather.

Riders had to contend with wind, rain and heavy snow showers over Blacko summit.

The race was won by Derek Parkinson from the drag2zero racing team with a great time of 1 hour 05.32 minutes.

The first Wheeler over the line was Pete Heywood with a 1.22:13, followed by Chris Smedley with a 1.22:32.

Ian Wilcox did an excellent ride on his mountain bike with a 1.24:08, beating a number of riders riding trick time trial bikes.

The Wheelers will be looking to have a good season this year with many members racing and a good social scene which accommodates new riders to the sport.

The combined clubs event on March 31st is where a number of the new members try out their first race, and is a popular low key event on the Garstang Course.
