Golf season gets into full swing with drive-ins

NEW Ghyll Goilf Club captain Bob Bugler started the new season with the traditional drive-in, and is pictured driving into office.

Lady captain Margaret Taylforth and junior captain Sam Bugler were also present on a cold and frosty morning. The weather did pick up and a very close competition was played in the Doubles Opening Day competition.

Partners were drawn and success went to Craig Lemon and Steve Mortimer with 41 points. They won on the back nine from David Pinder and Steve Greenwood, who also had 41 points. In third pace also with 41 points was Jim Warner and David Cockall.

The ladies played an opening scramble last Tuesday and this was won by Susan Tattersall, Connie Theodore and Janet Whipp (71.2).

Saturday was the last match of a very enjoyable and competitive season of Mixed Winter League. The winners were Emma Blades and junior captain Sam Bugler.

• STEVE Parker, the new captain at Colne Golf Club drove the season in on Saturday before his side took on a side representing President Alan Lonsdale.

The President’s team were victorious 408 to 387.

Winning pairs on the captain’s side were Tony Ingram and Brian Earnshaw (39 points) from Parker and vice captain Stephen Barnes (37) and John Burgoyne and George Bradbury (37).

For the President’s side, Nick Gornall and Dean Foxcroft won with 41 points from Phil Standage and Alan Boardwell, and David Lord and Andrew Stephenson, both on 40.

On a beautiful spring day, the lady captain held her drive-in, with 40 ladies playing a Fout-ball betterball nine-hole stableford, with a shot-gun start.

The Lady Captain’s team won by five points from the Lady Secretary’s team 180 points to 175.

Individual team winners on the Lady Captain’s team were Joan Greenwood and Marie Lonsdale with 22 points, and on the Lady Secretary’s team, Liz Reddy and Kath Vernon with 23 points.

Meanwhile, Roger Harris, the Grounds Committee Chairman, achieved his first hole in one in over 50 years of playing, but not on his home course!

Roger, now aged 70, was playing at Moor Town in Leeds with captain Steve Parker, John Burgoyne and Tony Ingram in a friendly fourball, when he aced the uphill 180-yard par 3 8th hole using his trusty 7 wood.

• NELSON hosted the Lady Captain’s team agsinst the Lady Vice Captain’s team.

A total of 50 ladies took part in a season-opening nine-hole stableford team competition, and both teams scored 363 points in a wonderful start to the season.

• MARSDEN Park hosted their Captains’ Drive-In on Saturday.

The men’s competition was won by John Atkinson (38-8.5-29.5) from David Cloxton (39-9-30) and Robert Eastwood (39-8-31). Ladies’ winner was Julie Alderson (43-13-30) from Janet Kelly (40-9.5-30.5), and the junior winner was Tyler Baxter (40-10-30).
