WHILE Pendle Olympian Steven Burke was winning Gold in Melborne, pulling on the famous Rainbow jersey as a World champion, another Pendle rider was making big strides in her quest to be the next generation of top cyclists from the borough.

Sixteen-year-old Amy Gornall from Barnoldswick rode herself into second place overall at the four-stage, youth tour of Scotland, based in Perth.

The Easter event had teams from all over the UK, with the West Craven High pupil riding for the girls’ North West team.

Her attacking riding on the fourth and final stage, where she placed second, also won her the King of the Mountains title and the polka dot jersey.

Overall winner was Melissa Lowther from the GB Talent Team, winning from Amy by only 15 seconds.

Cycle Sport Pendle had a team of four in the Under 16 boys’ race, Oliver Payton finishing highest overall in 25th position.

The rest of the team, Connor French, Sam Ross, and Jacob Peatfield gained valuable experience and rode strongly throughout.

The team was managed by Commonwealth gold medallist Alan Gornall.

Alan said: “The boys learnt so much and rode well despite several punctures.

“This was CSP’s first team at a National level event and a major step for the club in building experience and talented riders for the future.”
