PLANS to reopen a key route through Nelson by the end of this week has been put off.

Sewer work on A682 Scotland Road is taking longer than intended and United Utilities has announced this week that it is likely to stay closed until May 18th.

The road has been closed for many weeks between Fountain Street and Clayton Street because a new sewer system was being fitted to remove the danger of flooding.

In a letter to people in the area, a spokesman for United Utilities’ customer services department said: “We have been making good progress but we have hit a number of unexpected problems and I want you to know what we plan to do next.

“So far, we have nearly completed diversion of the water mains in Scotland Road and Clayton Street and have constructed most of the new sewer in Scotland Road.”

But the letter explained more time was needed and added: “Therefore we are unable to reopen the road on April 27th as planned but expect to be in a position to reopen it by Friday, May 18th 2012.

“So far, your patience and co-operation during this work has really helped our team and I would like to say thank you for this. We will continue to do all we can to help you get on with your daily routine.”

It concludes: “And don’t worry, during this work you will still be able to flush the loo, wash the dishes and generally do all your daily activities that generate wastewater.”
