Colne Reserves went down to the odd goal in five in the Galaxy Lancashire League at the XLCR Stadium on Monday night.

Visitors Formby started the stronger and created a series of chances without finding the net.

But the Reds began to find their feet and took the lead on 21 minutes when Steve Pickup’s free kick was headed on into the area by Dave Blacklock and fell to Daniel Russell who steered his shot inside the far post in the crowded goalmouth.

As Colne took control, a second goal looked to be on the cards with Russell, Chris Walker and Chris Baron buzzing around the opposition penalty area.

But five minutes before the interval, the Reds defence failed to close down Callum Blackhall who was given space to fire home a low shot from just outside the penalty area for Formby’s equaliser at 1-1.

Seven minutes after the interval, the visitors took the lead when a looping cross was headed home at the far post by Oliver Gallagher for Formby’s second goal.

The Reds fought hard in search of an equaliser with Russell shooting wide after Jason Barrowclough had set up a good chance and Sean Thompson being blocked off on his goalbound run by a desperate Formby defence.

After 77 minutes, Russell’s through ball sent Thompson into the area and when his shot was parried by Formby keeper Tom Simmons, Dominic Allen fired in the rebound to level the scores at 2-2.

Formby came back strongly and James Kenyon made a series of excellent saves to keep them out.

But in the closing minutes, he could not hold on to Zak Riley’s shot and Anthony Yool was first to the loose ball to fire in the winning goal for Formby from close range.

Colne Reserves have one fixture left on Monday evening when they are at home to AFC Fylde 7.45pm kick off.

Colne’s first team travel to play Glossop tomorrow at 3pm and are away to Bacup on Sunday, 3 p.m. kick-off,.

Due to Bacup’s backlog of fixtures both clubs have agreed to move the game forward a day from Monday, meaning Colne play away on successive days.
