COLNE took a deserved point at Glossop with a late goal by Jimmy Crorken in a wind affected game.
The Reds looked to be in control in the opening stages of the game with Crorken and Neil Stansfield putting good balls into the home penalty area and Crorken’s free kick after 19 minutes curled just over the bar of the home goal.
Colne had their claims for a penalty waved aside on 22 minutes when Mark Threlfall looked to be tripped by a defender in the penalty area but three minutes later, they fell behind to a set piece at the other end. A corner kick was laid back for Nicholas Allen to cross into the Colne penalty area and when a goalbound header was blocked on the line, Andy Sensale fired home from close range to give Glossop the lead.
Glossop might have increased their lead before half time but Chris Thompson was quickly off his line to dive at the feet of Sam Hind and make a double save before clearing the ball after 33 minutes.
Colne took the initiative in the second half with the wind at their backs and Threlfall had a shot blocked in the area before Crorken flashed a header just wide of the target. More pressure from a Luke McVarish free kick won Colne a corner after 53 minutes, and the Reds were awarded a penalty when Crorken’s corner was headed on at the near post by Threlfall and handled by a defender in the goalmouth. Glossop keeper Ben Proctor made a good save to keep out Stansfield’s spot kick at the foot of the post and, although Stansfield got to the loose ball, he shot wide from a narrow angle.
Colne created a succession of chances but failed to find the target and were almost punished after 80 minutes when Glossop broke down the wing and Dean McGregor’s cross found Sam Marshall unmarked at the far side of the penalty area but again Thompson came out bravely to claim the ball at his feet when a goal looked to be on the cards.
The Reds continued to press forward and were rewarded after 88 minutes when the industrious McVarish was chopped down on the edge of the area and Crorken’s free kick found the top corner of the net with a slight deflection to level the scores at 1-1.
