Students at Stonyhurst College are celebrating today after scooping excellent A-Level results

Some 71% of papers taken at the Hurst Green college scored A*, A or B grades to give the college its best ever results with 20% of candidates scoring straight A* or A grades.

Top performing departments included economics and chemistry.

Head teacher Mr Andrew Johnson said: “My colleagues and I are delighted for our students. Achieving such outstanding grades is a fitting reward for their hard work.

“I also congratulate and thank Stonyhurst teachers for the excellent support they have given their students.”

Earby crook told to ‘grow up’

A crook whose “job” it was to sell a £12,000 car and a £180 mountain bike, taken in New Year house raids, has kept his freedom.

Burnley Crown Court was told that Tony Hayton (47) was caught after he was seen walking away from the stolen Corsa and was arrested and searched.

The defendant, an ex-heroin addict who now smokes cannabis, admitted two charges of handling stolen goods.

Hayton, of Waddington Street, Earby, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for a year by a judge, who told him to grow up and act his age.

Julian Goode (prosecuting) said the car was pinched from Victoria Crescent, Earby, on December 31st, 2013. The keys had been taken in a house burglary.

Later the same day, an officer in Hargreaves Street, Nelson, saw a man walking away from the stolen vehicle.

He watched as the defendant went to a nearby property and entered it. The defendant was arrested and searched.

He was found to be in possession of car keys plus white cable which had been in the car when it was taken.

Mr Goode said Hayton’s address at Waddington Street was then searched and the GT mountain bike, also taken in the house raid, was found.

Hayton, who, the court was told, had a record for petty crime and convictions for dishonesty, was questioned and denied the offences.

Kathryn Johnson (defending) said a long-standing heroin addiction accounted for the majority of Hayton’s offending. He had been free of the drug since 2010.

The barrister continued: “He accepts he still occasionally uses cannabis when he feels particularly low and has cravings so far as returning to heroin use is concerned.”

Sentencing him, Judge Beverley Lunt said Hayton’s job was to sell the stolen property and try and get rid of it.

She added: “If people didn’t have any way of getting rid of stolen goods, they wouldn’t burgle houses.

“It’s time you grew up, acted your age and stopped doing this.”

Barlick up and running with home win

After a 4-3 opening day defeat at Congleton Town, Barnoldswick Town claimed their first points of the season with a 4-1 win at home to AFC Blackpool on Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, Town had skipper Arley Barnes and Harry Thompson missing due to injury.

Into the starting line-up came Carl Ellerton and James Crorken, with new signing Scott Moore on the bench.

Blackpool took a deserved lead four minutes before the break as full back Jamie Nay shot from fully 30 yards out, and Alex Palffy appeared to dive over the ball as it nestled in the bottom right corner.

In injury time Town won a free kick out wide, and from Jake McEneaney’s ball in, Shaun Airey found himself unmarked at the near post, placing his header in off the underside of the bar.

If the first half was all Blackpool the second was the opposite.

On 53 minutes, after a corner was cleared, Joe Gaughan struck a fierce left foot shot that swerved towards the far post, and nestled in the corner to put Town in front.

Then on 69 minutes Ellerton played a magnificent ball into the path of Jon Beckwith who streaked past the stretched defence before shooting into the far corner.

And with three minutes left Town made the game safe, Threlfall crossing to substitute Ben Gorman, who controlled before scoring into the bottom corner.

At Congleton Town, Town went down 4-3 having trailed 4-1 with 20 minutes left, tha nks to goals from Scott McGowan (16), Andy Alston (21), Scott McGowan (49) and Scott Barlow (60), with Liam Britton (36) having sent Town in 2-1 down at half-time.

Gaughan, from the penalty spot, pulled one back after 70 minutes, before Airey’s 89th-minute strike.

Tomorrow sees Town host derby rivals Colne in the FA Cup (kick-off 3 p.m.) before Barlick travel to Padiham on Wednesday night (7-45 p.m.).

A Fence hostelry has been put up for sale by its owner after its latest occupier ceased trading.

The former Forest Inn in Cuckstool Lane has been put on the market for £450,000 after the Babar Elephant Indian restaurant closed in July.

The ex-pub, which was Barocco’s Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar prior to Babar Elephant, is up for sale with Skipton chartered surveyors Westlake and Co.

A spokesman for Babar Elephant cited rent and a drainage issue for closing its Fence venture.

The company opened the Four Elephants restaurant in Skipton Road, Foulridge, in October last year.

A-level results trauma? Samaritans here to help

AS and A-level results came out yesterday and will affect an estimated three million young people in England and Wales.

If anyone is struggling because of exam results, or worried about a friend or relative, Samaritans is here round the clock, every day of the year.

Getting the results you hoped for can be great, but it can be very difficult if the unexpected happens. Plans for the future such as university or college can feel as if they have been scuppered overnight and it can be hard to see a way forward.

The friends and family of the young people involved can also feel the knock-on effects of worrying about results and the consequences of dashed hopes. Talking this through can help everyone deal with the situation.

“Samaritans volunteers are here round the clock, every day of the year for anyone who is struggling to cope after the AS and A-level results. We keep conversations private and we won’t judge,” said Ian Hartley, director of the Pendle, Burnley, Rossendale and Craven branch.

“As well as calling the helpline, you can contact us via SMS, send an email or you can come to your local branch and talk to a volunteer face-to-face if that’s what you would prefer. “

Samaritans volunteers also carry out outreach work in their branch areas and are available at Festivals, in some city centres at weekends and sixth forms and further education colleges.

Contact the Samaritans on 01282 694929/01706 83099/01756 700929 or 08457 90 90 90 (call charges apply), email jo@samaritans.org or call in at the branch at 15 Market Square, Nelson.

Man jailed for sexually assaulted mum-to-be in street

A sex attacker who grabbed a heavily pregnant mother’s bottom in a Burnley street has been locked up - 10 days before he was due to get married.

Darren Hargreaves (45) struck as the vulnerable victim, who was just weeks off giving birth, pushed her toddler in a buggy, in broad daylight. She was terrified by what happened and was driven from her home by the upset, Burnley Crown Court heard.

The hearing was told Hargreaves has convictions for molesting females spanning three decades.

Hargreaves was planning to marry on August 21st. His fiancée left the court sobbing as he was taken from the dock to start a 21-month jail term.

The defendant, formerly of Ball Street, Nelson, admitted sexual assault. He had initially denied the allegation, but changed his plea the day he was due to face trial. He was ordered to sign the sexual offenders register for 10 years.

Prosecutor Julian Goode told the court at about 11am, the woman was walking from a shop and had her child with her, in a buggy.

She turned into a street and saw a man walking towards her. Mr Goode said: “As he walked towards her, on the same side, he passed her on her left hand side and grabbed the left side of her bottom.

“She was terrified and walked away as fast as she could. She did not want to go home. As a result, she ended up staying with her sister some distance away and in fact stayed there until after she gave birth.”

Hargreaves was later arrested and denied the offence. The victim picked out the defendant as the man who had touched her on a video identification parade two weeks later.

Kathryn Johnson, in mitigation, said of the latest offence : “The touching was very brief. It was over the clothing and it wasn’t sustained.

“I accept there is the fact of his previous convictions, which puts a different complexion on the case.”

The barrister urged the court to impose an intensive community order, which, she said “would potentially protect the public so far as the future is concerned, rather than a relatively short custodial sentence”.

The barrister said Hargreaves and his partner were due to get married on August 21st. She added :” The defendant and his partner are most anxious that he is able to attend on that date.”

Passing sentence, Judge Beverley Lunt told Hargreaves: “Once again you are before the court for assaulting a woman. It means that your inappropriate sexual acts have now spanned three decades.”

Judge Lunt said the pregnant victim would be entitled to feel safe walking with her young child at 11am, but she wasn’t.

“You show very limited remorse and acceptance of what you did, you seem to be denying your previous convictions and don’t accept any sexual motivation as far as this matter is concerned.”

Tipping: French overtake British as world’s worst tippers

A global report has revealed that the French, not the British, are taking the top spot as the world’s worst tippers in holiday hotspots.

The new Global Tipping Index from Direct Line Travel Insurance1 investigated tipping trends from holiday locations across the globe, including Barcelona, Las Vegas, Paris, Phuket, Sao Paulo and Ibiza.

While Brits abroad are notoriously known for their poor tipping, the findings highlight it is the French who take the title of the world’s tightest tippers. One in three (30%) of the bars and restaurants interviewed highlight Britain’s closest Continental neighbour as most tight-fisted.

British travellers were placed second (21%) with Italy (11%) completing the bottom three.

At the other end of the league table, over a quarter (27%) of establishments in the index highlight that Americans are the most generous tippers. This is followed by the Germans (21%) and the Russians (16%). Only six per cent of bars highlighted Brits as the best tippers.

The Global Tipping Index reveals the average tip received by bars and restaurants across the world is 11%, with the most generous tips given in Argentina and the USA (both 13%).

Despite this, Brits tip seven per cent in bars and restaurants, two thirds of the global average. More than a third (35%) of restaurants and bars went on to say British travellers do not tip anything at all.

Tom Bishop, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, said: “Tipping expectations vary hugely across the globe and reflect different cultures, attitudes and laws. Our reserved nature and laws preventing employers using tips to top up salaries mean there is not an established tipping culture in the UK. Many of us feel awkward and confused when it comes to tipping practices across the world.

“To avoid uncomfortable situations and causing offence abroad do your research into the nuances of tipping in the country you are visiting, as practices can vary widely from country to country. In Japan for example, tipping is seen as offensive and considered an insult, but in the USA it is expected.”

Barnoldswick skate park plan is ramped up

Ambitious plans have been announced to create a brand new sophisticated skate park in Barnoldswick to develop future skating talent.

Local councillors are backing the initiative after being approached by users of the existing skating area at Victory Park who feel it is no longer challenging enough.

A new Barnoldswick Skate Park group has been set up on Facebook and an initial meeting held to get the blades rolling on the project.

Group members are looking at skate parks in Clitheroe and Hebden Bridge as examples of successful ventures to emulate where people currently travel out of town to go to.

However, it is anticipated that creating a park that is the best in the North-West could cost up to £250,000.

Coun. Anthony Lancaster, vice-chairman of Barnoldswick Town Council and chairman of the newly-established Barnoldswick Skate Park Group, said: “We had a meeting with the children on Monday, August 3rd, down at the park to see what they had in mind and the response we got was fantastic.

“The kids showed really enthusiasm and a lot of promise, so much so, they are already planning ways to raise some money, including a fundraiser on September 27th.

“We are fully aware we have a lot of fund-raising to do. There will be one or two small grants we can get and a few small donations, but the rest will have to be raised.

“This week we have had the national Britain in Bloom judges visit to Barnoldswick and it has been incredible to see how the community has come together and what can be achieved.

“I’m hoping to plan meetings with charities and businesses, and I’m in the process of setting up the bank account.”

As well as both amateur skaters and those of semi-professional standard who use the existing park, there is the hope that creating a state-of-the-art facility could see it become a destination for both national and international users for years to come.

Coun. Lancaster added: “We have to be realistic about it. Do we want to rush it and create something that is dated and outgrown in 10 years time? Or do we want to take that bit longer to build something that is still valuable in 25 or 30 years?

“I know my brother who does BMX-ing travels all over and has even been abroad to different parks. I think there is definitely scope to make it a destination that people travel here for.”

Erasmus denies Nelson in last over

Nelson travelled to Accrington on Saturday on the eve of the Worsley Cupfinal but lost by the narrowest of margins in the last over.

Having won the toss, Nelson elected to bat first but lost Lewis Bradley’s wicket early when he was caught at midoff for 10.

Russell Bradley and Harrison Phelan, though, stuck around for over an hour and a half as they added 90 runs for the second wicket.

Phelan was the more belligerent of the two and he hit 5 fours and 2 sixes from 85 balls as he scored his firstever league half-century.

Phelan became Ockert Erasmus’ first victim soon after, caught for 51.

From that point, Nelson began to lose wickets regularly. Russell Bradley, after facing 107 balls and collecting just two boundaries in a 128 minute innings, was bowled by Keiron Grimshaw for 45.

Neil Thompson (5) and Khurrum Nazir (15) both lost their wickets trying to force the pace and Nelson went 6 wickets down on the loss of Xander Pitchers, their Namibian subpro, caught behind for 23.

Richard Meade (2) was the only other wicket to fall and Toxy Hussain and Sam Halstead added 14 useful from the last 9 balls.

Hussain’s innings contained 3 fours as he made 17 from 13 balls. Nelson, with 190 for 7, had given themselves something to defend.

Accrington made their intentions clear from the start and had 30 runs on the board after only 5 overs.

They had, though, lost Matt Wilson, caught at midon off Halstead for 4.

Halstead also claimed the wicket of Graeme Sneddon who was caught behind for 15 but Stuart Crabtree and professional Erasmus continued to keep the runrate above 5 per over.

Hussain dropped a skyer from Crabtree when he was 26, so it was some relief to him when Meade held a skyer to dismiss him for 34.

Thompson bowled Grimshaw to put Accrington on 111 for 4 and Pitchers was then brought into the attack.

With his rightarm offbreaks, he initially curtailed the flow of runs, then he began to take wickets.

Jacob Clarke (10), Ali Hasham (3) and Jon Hayhurst (0) all fell to Pitchers whilst Thompson accounted forRamiz Hussain.

Accrington were suddenly in danger at 153 for 8 with 7 overs remaining, although Erasmus was still at the crease with 69 to his name.

Jimmy Hayhurst hit a bright and breezy 13 in a valuable 32 run stand until Pitchers struck again, having Hayhurst caught at longon by Halstead.

Pitchers finished with 4 for 41 from his 11 overs and Halstead came in to bowl the final over with Accrington requiring 5 to win and Erasmus on strike.

A dot ball was followed by a mighty six and Erasmus, celebrating his reappointment as professional for next season, finished on 95 not out.

He had hit eight fours and that six in a perfectly-paced innings.

Dyche looking to affect striking options

$

Clarets boss Sean Dyche is happy with his striking options, but isn’t averse to adding to them.

Burnley have held talks with Karlsruher SC forward Rouwen Hennings over a deal which could cost between €2-3m, although discussions had not brought the move to a conclusion at the time of writing.

It had been suggested the 27-year-old would sign in time to be available to face Birmingham City at Turf Moor tomorrow, but chances of a swift resolution were receding last night.

Dyche does have competition among his current pool, starting at Leeds United last Saturday with new signing Jelle Vossen and Lukas Jutkiewicz, with Marvin Sordell and goalscorer Sam Vokes coming off the bench, and summer arrival Chris Long is also getting up to speed in terms of his fitness.

Dyche said: “We’ve got good options, that’s what you want. We’ve got a mixture.

“We’re still actively looking if we think there are people who can affect that mixture.

“You have to be productive at the top of the pitch. We like the framework of the team, the energy, the organisation. We’re generally quite secure as a unit and we do want that attacking force.

“If the right ones become available then we will add to our striking options no matter how many we’ve got. It’s about having the right ones.”

And Dyche is prepared to add to his squad in whichever position deals present themselves: “There isn’t a number on it. There’s a certain level we can go to financially. We have got finance, but there is a certain level.

“There are some situations in the Championship which have certainly surprised me by the level of finance both for the player’s contracts and the fees.

“Some of the players we’ve been in for, I’ve been stunned by the amount of money asked for, so we still shop accordingly to the good values that the club have with the idea of the finance of the club.”

Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury is still expected to make the move to Turf Moor, having indicated to Forest boss Dougie Freedman he would like to take the opportunity, even though he would have to take a pay cut to make it happen.

Forest are thought to be waiting for reinforcements before allowing the move to go through.

Darikwa keen to make his mark!

$

New boy Tendayi Darikwa is flattered by comparisons to the departed Kieran Trippier - but the former Spireite doesn’t want to live in the full back’s shadow.

The 23-year-old provided the assist for Sam Vokes’s equaliser against Leeds United at Elland Road on his debut and featured for the duration in the Capital One Cup loss against Port Vale midweek.

Darikwa acknowledges that he’s got big boots to fill following the exit of 2012 Player of the Year Trippier, who was inducted in to the PFA Championship team of the year twice, but he wants to start his own legacy at Turf Moor.

“It doesn’t add pressure to me,” he said. “I don’t know Kieran - but obviously I know he’s a good player which is why he’s gone to the level he has. I try not to compare myself to anyone - I try and base my game on what I am and what I can do. It’s nice to be compared to somebody who has gone on to the next level but I want to show the people here what I can do.

“I like to get forward and get crosses in to the box. I also need to make sure that we’re getting clean sheets as well because that’s my job as a defender. I haven’t got the clean sheet yet but thankfully I got the assist for Vokesy.”

For now Darikwa is fully focussed on making the right back spot his own, knowing that one-time Aston Villa defender Matt Lowton will add competition for places on his return from injury.

“For me coming in to the football club I knew Matty Lowton was here and he’s a quality player in my position,” Darikwa said. “Unfortunately for him he got an injury but being fit I had to be ready to play when I came through the door. It’s an opportunity for me to show what I can do and hopefully I can keep the shirt for as long as I can.

“I think the general quality of the football is a lot higher than what I’ve been used to over my career so far. I think the tempo in the games is slightly quicker as well. I think when you go in to any competitive game everybody is working hard to get the three points though.

“I feel it’s something I can adapt to pretty quickly. I wouldn’t have signed for the football club if I didn’t feel that I could make the step up. Hopefully I can show that in the games to come.”

Darikwa is likely to start against Birmingham City on home soil on Saturday (kick-off 12-30 p.m.) and he’s eager to keep shaping his partnership with George Boyd down the right hand side.

“It will be nice to get out in front of the fans and hopefully we can make it a good day with three points,” he said. “It will be nice to play in front of a full house and get the win.

“I’ve watched a lot of Boyd over the years with highlights on TV so to be playing with him is a bit surreal. I’m enjoying playing with him and hopefully we can get a good partnership together. Every time you play with quality players that out-shines everything.

“Personal relationships don’t really get involved too much on the football pitch so when quality plays alongside quality it matches. Hopefully we can keep putting in some good performances together.”

Colne suffer heavy defeat against Enfield

Colne showed worrying signs of returning to their early-season form in a heavy defeat at home to Enfield on Saturday.

Colne were bowled out for 114 in 40.2 overs, and could keep Enfield occupied for just 21.1 overs in their reply of 115-1.

Skipper Matt Walker won the toss, and chose to bat. John Lambert (0), Adam Holt (17), Joel Duerden (11) and Tom Bradshaw (2) had been and gone with the score at 52-4, and the best partnership of the innings followed between professional Thomas Kaber and wicketkeeper Sam Tillotson. They had added 39 before Tillotson was out to a bat-pad catch off Enfield professional Graeme van Buuren.

Careful batting took Colne past 100 before the next wicket fell, but a couple of controversial decisions removed any chance of building a big score. Both Kaber and Danny Kegg were given out lbw playing forward to Simon O’Loughlin, a left arm slow bowler coming round the wicket. Bowling from the edge of the crease, he would have had to turn it like Shane Warne to get the ball to pitch in front and go on to hit the stumps; he was not obtaining that sort of spin. These were two of five lbw decisions in the innings.

The rest of the side subsided quickly, Walker 10 not out followed by three ducks. Colne’s score did not look anything like a challenging target, and so it proved. Liam Bedford scored 68 untroubled runs not out; the only wicket fell when Danny Kegg induced Lewis Wright to clip a ball straight to Walker for 23. The match was over by 5-10 p.m.

This weekend’s game is tomorrow at Rishton, one of two clubs below Colne in the table.

Friday night’s game against the Golf Club resulted in a Cricket Club victory. Matthew Wilson and Jeff Ellis for the golfers, and David Swarbrick for the cricketers, rolled back the years with lively innings, and the pick of the bowlers was Sam Tillotson. He destroyed the Golf Club middle order with 4-1 run in two overs. It seems unlikely that this form will translate into the Lancashire League!

Duff – ‘Let’s make Turf a horrible place to come to’

$

While Turf Moor might be less of a culture shock for Championship clubs than the Premier League elite, Michael Duff is out to make it a “horrible place to go.”

Birmingham City are the first visitors to Burnley tomorrow lunchtime (kick-off 12-30 p.m.), with the Clarets looking for a first win of the season.

The Blues started their campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Reading last Saturday, followed by victory at Bristol Rovers in the Capital One Cup.

Burnley may have lost eight home games in the top flight, but they held Manchester United, Spurs twice, and beat Southampton and Manchester City at home – on the back of suffering only two defeats at Turf Moor in their promotion season.

Duff, in his 12th season at the club, knows only too well how important home form can be for the Clarets: “When the place is bouncing, it’s a tough place for anyone to come to. We’ve shown that in the Premier League against some of the best teams in the country, so we need to do that again.

“The year we went up, we only lost five games out of 46 full stop, but we made Turf a tough place to come to, and a lot of people say that, in the history of the place, it’s a horrible place to go to. So we’ve got to make sure it still is.

“But every game in the Championship is a tough game, there were funny results on the first day, and it’s a coupon buster every week, not that I’m a betting man, but if I was I’d leave the Championship well alone!”

Burnley have started with a good point from a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, before the 1-0 cup exit at Port Vale on Tuesday night, and Duff assessed the side’s efforts so far: “We’ve done okay as a back four, but we’re probably not creating enough chances.

“Teams are maybe shutting up shop against us a bit more, and we’re not getting as much time on the ball, but we’ve got good players and I’m sure something will drop and we’ll kick on.

“Look at the forwards we’ve got, they’re all proven goal scorers at this level, but it’s the second game of the season, we’ve drawn one and lost one, and it’s the end of the world.

“We’ve not become a bad team and bad players overnight, it’s just a case of getting our heads down and working hard.

“The manager was disappointed with the performance and result, as were the players, but once we pick the bones out of it, we’ll move forward, work on what we need to improve on, and try and win the points against Birmingham.”

Burnley have become a scalp for teams, but Duff admitted at Vale Park: ”We’re disappointed, it was a team good enough to win the game, but there wasn’t a lot in it, I don’t think either keeper really made a save in the game.

“They’ve scored a goal from a bit of a scramble.

“We’re a scalp, people are ready for us now, we’re not little old Burnley at the minute because of the league we’ve just come out of, but I don’t think you can read into it too much. We need to perform better though.

“I thought we defended well, I don’t think they had a shot on target before the goal, which was a bit of a scramble.

“It think it did go in so it was a good decision in the end. It took a long time to give it, but it was the right decision.”

Clarets land German striker Hennings

Burnley have completed a deal to sign former Germany Under 21 striker Rouwen Hennings.

The Karlsruher SC forward Rouwen Hennings flew in for talks on Wednesday over a deal which could cost between €2-3m, and discussions have reached a successful conclusion.

It had been suggested in Germany that the 27-year-old would sign in time to be available to face Birmingham City at Turf Moor tomorrow, but the noon deadline to register the player passed earlier, with international clearance also to be received yet.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche now has stern competition for places up front, starting at Leeds United last Saturday with new signing Jelle Vossen and Lukas Jutkiewicz, with Marvin Sordell and goalscorer Sam Vokes coming off the bench, while summer arrival Chris Long is also getting up to speed in terms of his fitness.

Dyche said yesterday: “We’ve got good options, that’s what you want.

Hennings netted 18 goals in 29 games last season to finish top scorer in Bundesliga 2, helping Karlsruhe finish third.

He added a goal against Hamburg in the promotion/relegation play-off game, though Hamburg prevailed 3-2 on aggregate.

A former Germany Under 21 international, scoring 13 in 21 appearances, he featured alongside the likes of Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng and Mezut Ozil, and has attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs.

Hennings started his career with Hamburg II, where he hit 11 goals in 51 games, and after loan spells with VfL Osnabrück and St. Pauli, he joined St. Pauli in 2009, scoring 10 in 52 games.

A loan back to VfL Osnabrück brought a further five goals in 17 games, but his strikerate at Karlsruhe has been the best of his career, 37 in 95 appearances.

Meanwhile, there is no further progress with Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury, who boss Dougie Freedman is happy to call upon at home to Rotherham United tomorrow if need be.

The former Arsenal man is expected to make the switch to Turf Moor, but Freedman wants to bring in a replacement first.

Lansbury is believed to have indicated to Freedman he would like to take the opportunity to move to Turf Moor, even though he would have to take a pay cut to make it happen.

Forest are thought to be waiting for reinforcements before allowing the move to go through.

Wins for Earby and Barnoldswick

Earby and Barnoldswick were both victorious on Saturday.

In Section A, openers Dave Crotty (87) and Ian Clarkson (56) contributed 143 of Earby’s winning total of 219-9, after hosts Baxenden posted 216-9.

Luke Hipgrave took 4-78 off 17 overs and skipper Matt Haines 5-76 off the same number of overs, as Baxenden set a challenging total, with contributions from Liam Watkinson (29), Kurt Smithson (43), Matthew Schofield (31), Mark Rishton (20) and David Mills (37).

But Earby got home with a wicket and five balls to spare, with Lee Parkinson’s 28 adding to Crotty and Clarkson’s fine first-wicket stand, while Jake Greenbank (6 not out) and Anthony Kershaw (10 not out) kept their nerve.

The highest scorer came in section B was Lehann Jansen Van Rensburg, who, batting with power and precision, hit 111 not out for Brinscall at Barlick. However, he finished on the losing side in a run feast.

Needing 265 for the win, Barlick got home off the fifth ball of the 43rd over, helped by half centuries from Umar Saddique and Kyle Marshall.

Barlick reached the 50 mark before captain Luke Hodgson (32) hit a half chance to mid off to produce a magnificent diving catch, and Umer Saddique and brother Abdul got them above 100.

Barlick remained up with the rate throughout, and, eight down needing 10 to win, John Hall (26 not out) got the hosts over the line.

Earby host Read and Barlick are at home to Salesbury tomorrow.

Bar BB11 owner takes over Barcode

$

Bar BB11’s owner Paul Roberts is one man who firmly believes Burnley is still very much the place to be – so much so he has taken over Barcode and is planning to reopen the Hammerton Street venue in September.

When asked for his views on the town centre and its nightlife, this was his response.

“I think Burnley is one of the best towns within reasonable distance for a night out.

“I can already hear your mumbles! Let me explain. Since the previous Burnley Express articles I’ve listened to a lot of people talk about Burnley’s nightlife as you’ve made it quite a hot topic of discussion!

Here’s what’s sparked the debate - {http://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/burnley-s-nightlife-is-under-threat-1-7202579|Mick Cookson says Burnley nightlife is under threat}

“From listening to people, I realise it’s very easy for them to mistakenly compare Burnley ‘town’ to nearby ‘cities’. Especially with all this late night bus to Manchester malarkey!

“Cities are a different ball game, everyone has bigger budgets, from the venue owners to the police and the council. Let’s stop comparing the town to cities. Let’s compare towns to towns.

“Compared to most towns around here Burnley’s nightlife is absolutely electric! You can have a great night out without the expense of going to a city. My partner, Leah, and I, have been looking for a new venue for the past year, we’ve been visiting other nearby towns, Accrington, Blackburn, Rawtenstall, Darwen. When we compare these towns to Burnley, in our opinion, Burnley was coming out on top! Which is why we decided our second venue would be in Burnley, and that’s why we’ve taken over the Barcode building. We believe in the town, we are committed to the town, and we are putting our money where our mouth is!

Here’s what’s sparked the debate - {http://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/top-dj-burnley-nightlife-dead-and-buried-1-7351698|Is Burnley nightlife dead and buried?}

“I know you’re going to be a tough cookie to crack on the subject of Burnley’s nightlife. I imagine you’re thinking along the lines of, ‘Ok you have a fair point, it’s probably better than most other towns around here, but it’s still not what it was 10 years ago’. Hey, I’ll agree to that. It isn’t what it was 10 years ago. Agreed.

“Is anywhere as busy as it was 10 years ago? Not just nightclubs, but shops, markets, big retailers? Before the smoking ban, the double dip recession malarkey, the terrifying cheap supermarket deals etc. It’s all happened in recent years. I don’t know if you’ll agree but in my opinion nothing is what it was 10 years ago – and how boring would life be if it was?

“I employ a few students, a few from the local UCFB. One of them isn’t from around here, he has never seen Burnley 10 years ago, he’s only 19. I remember when he first started, he was, and still is, amazed at how busy Burnley is on a night out – he absolutely loves it. It strikes me that he has the same perception of the town as the younger generation of clubbers, the 18 to 22 year olds who come out now and enjoy Burnley, and take it for what it is. Is it fair for an older generation to come along and burst their bubble?

{http://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/burnley-bar-closes-down-1-7309920|What happened to Barcode? More here}

“We need more people going out with the view to enjoy their night and socialise with friends. Instead of people going out to pass judgement and waste their night looking for things to complain about.

“I’d like to also give Burnley Council a mention. They seem to be getting a hard time lately. Without flattering them too much I think Burnley Council is great.

“There are a lot worse out there! Some councils are just impossible to work with. Burnley Council has always been fair with myself and very helpful.

{http://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/letters/council-wants-to-see-vibrant-burnley-nightlife-1-7367936|What Burnley Council wants to see happening with night life}

“I was at a meeting a while ago where they got a lot of stick for business rates. People don’t understand sometimes their hands are tied, there are some things they can do, and some things they can’t do. A prime example is business rates, they don’t have the power to lower people’s business rates – that lies with the VOA and is a government issue. Business rates are a huge problem but I knew they were when I set up my business and accounted for them. I hate that club owners get smashed with such heavy bills but I make my peace with it and live with it.

“Now whilst praising Burnley council I won’t stand here and say they’re the best council in the world, there are a few things I feel they could improve, such as parking in the town centre, allocating budgets and spending to areas that need it more than others. What I will say is the council is currently working on setting up a forum with business owners and licensing, to hear our voice and listen to our views.

“I’ll leave with my final thoughts, that I’m a big believer in ‘its not where you go, its who your with’. If you’re with decent company, beer and music, you’ll enjoy yourself whether you’re on a desert island or in the heart of a festival.”
