AT Ghyll It was a very tight finish on Sunday in the Seniors Championship.
Keith Whittingham beat Brian Strickland on the back nine on a card play-off with a net 73. Third was David Bowker with a net 74.
The Club Medal was held at the same time and this was won by Howard Thompson with a great net 64.
The Ladies’ section at Ghyll played their fourth medal of the season, with a depleted field as the first rounds of the club singles knockouts were also being played.
The winner of the medal was Susan Tattersall , second was Desley Mitchell and third was Aine Hotham.
At the Ladies’ Committee the ladies held a minutes silence for Nicolette Rhodes, who sadly passed earlier this month.
• NELSON’S ladies hosted Colne in their LLCGA Handicap Shield match, and home advantage proved decisive as they won 5.5 - 1.5.
The team was L. Grandfield, K. Dennis, M. Wilkinson, E. Dixon, A. Kendra, H. Varley and V. Eastwood.
The following day saw the LLCGA Bronze Shield match away at Stonyhurst, and again home advantage proved vital.
Nelson lost 3-2 with a team of P. Burrows, C. Jeffrey, S. Broughton, J. Thompson and L Hepworth. Last Thursday, the East Lancs Qualifier and Medal was won by Joyce Aikman (99-28-71) winning courtesy of a back nine of 32 from Sophie Potter (82-11-71) who had a back nine of 33.5.
She was second courtesy of a back six of 21.3, ahead of Glenys Duerden (100-29-71), who had a back nine of 33.5 and a back six of 22.3 - earning a one-shot handicap reduction.
ELLGA Qualifiers were Lynne Grandfield, Christine Fletcher and Pauline Burrows.
• AT Colne the 36-hole Hewitt Bowl competition was played over the weekend.
The first round was won by Jimmy Hartley (85-17-68)_ from Jason Lancaster (83-14-69) and Paul Kavanagh (82-13-69).
The second round was won by Martin Pratt(85-19-66), from Duncan Nixon (78-12-66) and Brian Earnshaw (74-7-67), meaning the overall winner was Pratt with a net 138, ahead of Phil Vernon (net 139) and Kavanagh (net 141).
Over 30 ladies competed for the President’s Prize, with last years winner Cheryl Barnes’ score of 93-20-73 pipping Lady Captain’s Stella Kitson’s 99-26-73 on a card play-off. Third place and best gross was won by Anne Black with a score of 87-13-74.
