A brave Colne woman is hopeful that an extreme charity challenge will raise awareness and funds for those living below the poverty line.

Cheyann Heap (21) will be spending just £1 a day throughout the month of May as part of a Global Poverty Project initiative.

The Live Below The Line scheme usually sees people spending five days in poverty.

But after an eye-opening visit to some of the most deprived parts of South America, Cheyann decided to push herself even further.

The aspiring psychologist, of Derby Street, said: “I am hoping to raise awareness of extreme poverty.

“1.46 billion people on this planet live off £1 a day for everything — not just food.

“Going to South America was a big shock to me. I have never experienced anything like that before.”

Cheyann is receiving plenty of support from her family and friends, and is already gathering recipe ideas from a book made by former Jamie Oliver student, Lloyd Hayes. One idea that has particularly caught her eye is a 33p pizza.

Now, the former Colne Park High School student is encouraging others to follow in her footsteps.

She said: “I would highly encourage people to take part, not for a month, but for five days. When I went to South America the people there were so caring and so giving — it changed my life.”

And Stephen Brown, UK campaign manager for the Global Poverty Project, said: “We’re not trying to replicate poverty but give people a deeper understanding of it. It’s a transformational experience. Of course for those living in extreme poverty, it’s not just five days nor is it the choice between brown or white rice, but often the choice between feeding your family or life-saving healthcare for your loved ones.”
