Champions Barnoldswick crashed to a surprise home defeat against Senior League novices Brooksbottom on the second weekend of the new Ribblesdale Cricket League campaign.

Barnoldswick only lost one match last season on their way to their first title since 1992.

However, they have already come unstuck thanks to Zohaib Qureshi’s at Victory Park on Saturday.

Qureshi made 70 out of the visitors’ 184 all out before Mohsin Iqbal weighed in with 7-50 as Barlick were dismissed for 155.

Stand-in professional Ockert Erasmus took 5-79 for Barnoldswick, while Matt hew Nutter and Michael Scothern chipped in with two wickets apiece.

However, in reply, only openers Nutter and Liam Bedford, who has started the season in good touch, could make over 20 as Iqbal ripped through the innings.

Nutter made 29 and Bedford fell three short of his half-century.

Barnoldswick made amends the following day, however, against Great Harwood.

Barlick made 125-8, with Umar Saddique top-scoring with 38.

And substitute pro Vishal Tripathi took 7-22 as the hosts were all out for just 54.

Barnoldswick host Oswaldtwistle tomorrow.

Earby, meanwhile, suffered two defeats after their opening day success.

On Saturday, South Australian professional Ben Dougall showed his worth with 123 in Ribblesdale Wanderers’ win at Earby.

Dougall’s century came in Wanderers’ 234-8, before the home side were dismissed for 159.

On Sunday, there were two centurions at Padiham.

Paid man Fahid Rehman hit an unbeaten 145 off just 120 balls as Earby closed on 228-8. Opener Chris Walton had made 28, with 24 extras contributing to the total.

But, chasing a rain-reduced target of 190, Padiham won with five wickets to spare as Kurt Robinson smashed an unbeaten 109 off 94 deliveries.

Richard Craddock took 3-42.

Earby host league newcomers Brooksbottom tomorrow, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.
