Mark Threlfall netted five goals over the week - including four against title-chasing Bootle - as Barnoldswick Town ended the season ninth in the North West Counties Premier Division.

Town had their eyes on seventh place on Tuesday night, but a 3-2 defeat at home to Congleton Town brought the curtain down on their campaign.

Barnoldswick led 1-0 at half-time with a goal from Threlfall nine minutes before the break, and Aaron Hollindrake doubled the advantage two minutes after the restart. But three goals in nine minutes from Mathew Worrall (66), Michael Koral (72) and a penalty from Chris Smith (75) gave the visitors the points.

On Saturday, Town won 6-3 at Bootle in an amazing game.

Town found themselves 2-0 down at the break against a side pushing Padiham for the title, but second half goals from Threlfall, who hit four, Liam Garbutt and Shaun Airey saw a remarkable turnaround.

The reserves also earned a 2-0 win at home to West Didsbury and Chorlton on Saturday, though Chris Gaskell’s side’s hopes of finishing runners-upwere dashed when they lost 2-0 at home to New Mills on Monday night.

They hosted Ashton Town last night and are at New Mills tomorrow, before travelling to West Didsbury and Chorlton on Monday.
