Well-known golfer and former Nelson retailer Keith Abbott died last Thursday at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital after a short illness.

Keith, aged 80, was an active and prominent member of Nelson Golf Club for more than 40 years, having recorded six hole-in-ones and winning many competitions.

He was also, until 2011, an active member of the council which runs the golf club, latterly serving as chairman of the House Committee.

He lived in Nelson almost all his life, only moving to Norwich last October to be closer to family. After working as a plumber and salesman in his younger years, Keith went on to open grocery stores in the Barkerhouse Road and Larch Street areas of Nelson.

In later life he carried out house clearances and dealt in used and antique goods.

Keith is survived by his wife Ada – they had been married 56 years – a son Michael, daughters Kathryn and Lynne, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral took place on Wednesday at Colney Woodland Burial Site, Norwich.

Family are planning a celebration of his life in the form of a golf day at Nelson Golf Club in mid-June for all his friends to remember him.
