Pendle Renegades went into the final game of the season knowing that if they avoided defeat to third place Skipton Town, they would clinch runners-up spot in the Craven League Second Division, and promotion.

And they did just that, winning 1-0 with a late goal from George Blackburn.

Renegades started the brighter of the two teams in what was a very cagey opening.

Jay Wright struck the foot of the post with a decent effort from inside the box after 20 minutes, and keeper Matt Garner was then called into action with Skipton’s first attempt on goal through Jordan Slade, but he did well low down to his right.

Skipton were the first team to have the ball in the net, but Antony Dean’s header was ruled out for off-side, and the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

Both teams failed to create many chances, with Renegades happier playing the game at their own pace.

Eventually the game’s crucial goal came after the introduction of Antony Reedy, who provided the cross for Blackburn, who controlled the ball in the box, side-stepped his marker and slotted past a helpless Skipton keeper to give the Renegades a vital one-goal cushion with only six minutes of the game to play.

Skipton then threw everything forward, and were awarded a free kick right on the edge of the box, but again they found a resilient Garner in their way, who parried the effort and caught the loose ball to protect the lead.

Man of the match was Shane Taylforth for his performance at the heart of the defence.

• Barnoldswick Town Whites Under 12s have had a busy end to the season.

They beat Colne Juniors 7-0 with a Teal Amos hat-trick, two from Cameron Langhorne and goals from Fergus Turnbull and Daniel Morley.

However, they lost the league cup final 3-2 to Barrowford Orange in extra time despite goals from Dylan Ward and Langhorne.

The side also beat Pendle Forest Falcons 5-1, with Langhorne (2), Amos, Turnball and Ward on target.
