The end of the football season produced a tense thriller in the North Valley Under 10s’ Boys’ League, as Trawden Celtic and Brierfield Celtic battled out a championship decider.
A quirk of the fixture list saw the two teams that had been neck and neck all season, meet in the final game.
Ahead of the game Brierfield Celtic were two points clear and knew a draw would be enough to secure the title at Trawden Celtic’s Skipton Road ground.
The game was end to end, yet remarkably, given the number of chances both sides created, the game was still 0 – 0 as it entered its final minute. Then came the twist in the tail!
Having resisted a period of Brierfield pressure that saw defender Jack Jordan make a goal line clearance, Trawden broke down the left wing.
Man of the match Dominic Broughton picked up the ball by the corner flag, and, surging forward, he beat four defenders, running the length of the pitch, before unleashing an unstoppable strike beyond the despairing dive of the Brierfield Celtic keeper.
With only 10 seconds left on the clock, the referee was barely able to restart the game before the final whistle ended a superb spectacle.
Team manager Andy Broughton, himself a former Trawden Celtic player, said: “It was a superb game between two excellent teams.”
