An 88-year-old man found hanged at his home in Colne was a “worrier”, an inquest has heard.
Mr Jerry Yureck, a popular member of Colne Royal British Legion Club for many years, was discovered by his wife hanging from a bannister at their home in Varley Street on February 27th.
He was taken to Airedale Hospital but sadly nothing could be done to save him.
An inquest at Burnley Coroner’s Court heard evidence from Mr Yureck’s son Robert who lived next door to his parents.
The retired ambulance paramedic said: “My father had always been a worrier but this got worse as he became older.
“Sometimes, during the course of an argument, he would say ‘I might as well kill myself’ but we always just took this as a figure of speech.
“He had no money worries or serious health problems, although he was having trouble sleeping.
“My mother said he had been fine the previous night. We were in absolute shock as we weren’t expecting this.”
Mr Yureck explained that because of the sleeping problems his parents had separate rooms, and on the morning of the 27th Mrs Yureck heard a loud bang before discovering her husband.
Pathologist Dr Walid Salman, who conducted the post-mortem examination, said toxicology tests showed there was nothing of relevance in his system. He gave the cause of death as hanging.
East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor recorded a verdict that Mr Yureck had taken his own life.
