The cause of a large fire in Nelson on Monday afternoon is being treated as “unknown” by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters were called out at around 5-30pm to an area of land just off Southfield Street next to a furniture business.
A big pile of rubbish was well alight by the time two fire engines arrived at the scene, and smoke from the fire could be seen pouring into the sky from across the town and beyond.
Crew Manager Rob Barker, from Nelson Fire Station, said: “It was big fire and a very, very large amount of smoke.
“It was a large pile of rubbish and debris but we don’t know how it has started or when.
“We had it under control within a few minutes.
“It was probably an hour’s work.
“We had to move some of the debris away to get to the seat of the fire and make sure it was all out bebfore we could safely leave.”
